At LAMP Academy, the English program focuses on three key goals:

English Program Levels

Level L – English 1 (Introductory)

  • Entry-level course for high school English.
  • Learn the basics of writing: thesis statements, essay structure.
  • Study grammar rules and expand vocabulary.
  • Analyze authors’ style, themes, and plots.
  • Introduction to research methods and public speaking.
Level A – English 2
  • Builds on English 1 principles.
  • Focus on both formal and informal writing styles.
  • Practice the full writing process (from pre-writing to final draft).
  • Continue grammar and vocabulary expansion.
  • Improve reading comprehension and analyze literary devices.
  • Oral presentations and advanced research skills.
Level M – English 3
  • Specialized focus on American literature.
  • Often paired with American History courses.
  • Advanced academic and creative writing.
  • Literary analysis of multiple genres.
  • Completion of a major research paper.
  • Multiple oral presentations throughout the year.
Level P – iBT English Language & Composition
(Alternative to English 3)
  • Designed for students preparing for TOEFL iBT or AP exams.
  • Develops strong reading and writing across diverse contexts.
  • Emphasizes the interaction between writer’s purpose, audience, and subject.
  • Builds critical awareness of rhetorical strategies and effective communication.
Level P Honor – English 4 (Advanced)
  • Final stage of high school English.
  • Focus on World Literature: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, essays.
  • Students write in-depth essays and literary analyses.
  • Completion of a research paper.
  • Numerous public speaking and oral presentation assignments.
AP English Literature & Composition
(Alternative to English 4)
  • Intensive focus on reading and critical analysis of literature.
  • Close reading of selected texts to understand structure, style, and theme.
  • Study of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone.
  • Prepares students for the AP exam and university-level literary studies.
Each year builds on previously learned skills, while gradually increasing complexity and exposure to advanced literature. The curriculum aligns with the 12 English Language Arts standards established by the Korean National Council of Teachers of English.
